MEASURING SPACE – Quiet observations combining landscape and architecture.
Lyle Gomes is a photographer and educator whose long-term study of human-made landscapes has been supported by both a Fulbright (Britain) and a Rockefeller Foundation residency, Bellagio, Italy. His previous project, Imagining Eden, was published by University of Virginia Press in 2005.
Measuring Space is a study of what we see and what we tend not to see—an investigation of spatial ambiguity. His photographs seem to combine multiple exposures but instead are single exposures without manipulation. Although he uses a traditional camera and film to record his observations, his primary ‘tool’ is his ability to see.
The inspiration for Measuring Space occurred during a month-long residency at Lake Como in 2002. The project now includes photographs from: Santorini, Greece; North Yorkshire, England; Presidio of San Francisco; and additional California locations.
His photographs have been exhibited nationally and are included in the permanent collections of San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego; Dumbarton Oaks, Washington D.C.; Cantor Center for the Arts, Stanford University; Santa Barbara Museum of Art; and the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris.
